How to Install Wallpaper Using Wallcovering Adhesive
How to Install Wallpaper Using Wallcovering Adhesive:
Installing wallpaper can completely transform a room, adding texture, pattern, and personality. Follow this step-by-step guide to apply wallpaper using Dynamic Heavy Duty Clear Wallcovering Adhesive, available at Brooks & Co. Decorating Centre Ingersoll.
What You’ll Need:
-
Dynamic Heavy Duty Clear Wallcovering Adhesive (recommended)
-
Wallpaper (ensure all rolls have the same lot number)
-
Wallpaper smoothing brush or plastic smoother
-
Sharp utility knife or snap-off blade
-
Wallpaper pasting brush, roller, or pasting machine
-
Sponge and clean water
-
Measuring tape
-
Level or plumb line
-
Drop cloths or plastic sheeting
-
Seam roller (optional)
Step 1: Surface Preparation
Proper surface prep is key to a flawless finish.
-
Clean the surface thoroughly: It must be free of dust, grease, old adhesive, and any other residues.
-
Ensure the surface is dry, smooth, and structurally sound: Patch any holes, sand down bumps, and repair damaged drywall or plaster.
-
Check for paint adhesion: Flaking or peeling paint should be scraped off and the area primed.
-
Remove any loose wallcoverings.
-
If you encounter unusual wall conditions, contact us or your adhesive supplier before proceeding.
Step 2: Measure & Plan
-
Measure the height of your wall and cut your wallpaper strips accordingly, leaving an extra 2-4 inches at the top and bottom for trimming.
-
Use a level or plumb line to mark your starting point - usually at the corner or behind a door, depending on your room layout.
Step 3: Apply the Adhesive
-
Do not dilute the adhesive - it is ready to use right out of the container.
-
Ensure room temperature is above 10°C (50°F) before you begin.
-
Using a pasting machine, roller, or brush, apply a thin, even coat of adhesive to the back of the wallpaper (unless you're using pre-pasted paper).
-
Avoid getting adhesive on the front surface of embossed, textured, or delicate wallcoverings.
Step 4: Book the Wallpaper
-
After applying adhesive, gently fold the ends of the strip towards the middle (paste-to-paste) without creasing.
-
Let the strip “book” (rest) for 3-5 minutes. This activates the adhesive and allows the paper to relax before application.
Step 5: Hang the Wallpaper
-
Start at your plumb line and position the first strip at the top of the wall, allowing excess at the ceiling.
-
Gently smooth the strip from top to bottom using a wallpaper brush or plastic smoother to remove air bubbles.
-
Match patterns if necessary as you continue to apply strips, working your way around the room.
-
Use a sharp knife and straightedge to trim excess at the ceiling and baseboards.
-
Use a seam roller to ensure seams lay flat, but avoid overworking them - especially with textured wallpaper.
Step 6: Clean-Up
-
Wipe off any excess adhesive immediately with clean water and a damp sponge.
-
For embossed or textured vinyls, be especially careful - adhesive left on the surface may be more difficult to remove once dried.
Step 7: Aftercare & Storage
-
Avoid touching or stressing the wallpaper while the adhesive is drying.
-
Store unused adhesive in a cool, dry place. Do not freeze.
